Mountain landscape with architecture on a base — bas-relief. Unknown craftsman. Chinese, Qing dynasty 1644–1911. Mid-19th century. Carved decoration showing architecture and mountain landscape motifs. Sculpture; height 33.5 cm, width 27.5 cm., A carved vertical stone-like sculpture with an irregular, jagged silhouette sits against a dark gray to black gradient background and a light gray surface; the piece shows a transition of colors from muted yellowish-green on one side to deep reddish tones on the other, with areas of pale cream and subtle gray mixed in. The surface is intricately textured with layered, porous formations resembling rugged rock faces and delicate, lacy patterns, and there are carved recesses and protrusions that create shadowed hollows and fine ridges. The reddish section has denser, more clustered, almost tree-like or organic filigree details compared with the more open, eroded appearance of the yellow-green side, and small terrace-like ledges and cavernous pockets are visible throughout the composition. Overall the object appears three-dimensional with varied surface depth, a naturalistic yet highly detailed sculptural quality, and a palette dominated by red, yellowish-green, cream, gray, and subtle brownish tones.
