Vase on base, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911, huaniao style, decorated with plum trees, birds and flowers, brown soapstone, late 19th century, China; vessel, height 43.0 cm, A tall, irregularly shaped carved object in deep reddish-brown with lighter speckles stands on a dark surface; its form is organic with smooth and rough contours, several carved recesses and protrusions, and a cluster of small pale elements attached to one side. The base is intricate and root-like with multiple openings and rounded legs in the same reddish-brown color. The background is a smooth gradient of dark gray to lighter gray. The visible colors are reddish-brown, pale off-white, dark gray, and black.
