Vase on base, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911, huaniao style; decorated with plum trees, birds and flowers; brown soapstone; late 19th century, China; vessel; height 43.0 cm, A tall, irregularly shaped object with a glossy, deep reddish-brown surface standing on an openwork base of similar color; the object has a rough, carved appearance with smooth, flowing contours and several cavities and protrusions, with visible pale streaks and small pale flecks running across its surface; the base is organic and root-like with multiple arching supports and hollowed openings; the background is a smooth gradient ranging from dark charcoal at the top to a lighter gray toward the bottom, and the platform beneath the object is a flat black surface.
