Decoration: feathers, aoi hollyhock plant ornament. 19th century. Japan, Edo. Function: container for shells used in the parlor game kai awase. Height 37.5 cm; diameter 40.0 cm., A top-down view of a round, shallow vessel with a glossy black interior and dark brown rim, set against a smooth gray background; the vessel has a few rectangular protruding handles with a worn brass-like appearance showing greenish and yellowish tones, and the surface of the interior reflects light creating subtle highlights and darker patches.
