Container hokai for shells for the game kai awase;, Japanese; Meiji 1868–1912 and Edo 1603–1868 periods; wood covered with black lacquer, decorated with gold maki-e lacquer, gilded copper fittings; decorated with feathers and aoi hollyhock plant ornament; used for boxes, shells, and parlor game kai awase; 19th century Edo–Meiji; place of origin: Edo, Japan; container; height 37.5 cm, diameter 40.0 cm, A dark brown, ribbed wooden container with a curved front stands on a set of short legs with gilded metal fittings; the front shows a central vertical wooden brace with small gilded diamond-shaped ornaments and elaborately engraved gold-colored metal plates at the top and bottom, and a few circular gold-colored medallion-like designs are set into the ribbed sides. On the left side of the front, inside a gold-colored oval, there is a stylized gold motif with curved, ribbon-like elements, and on the right side, inside a matching gold-colored oval, there is a gold motif resembling clustered rounded leaves or lily pads on stems. The leg caps and corner fittings are gold-colored with ornate engraved floral patterns, and small round openings appear at the sides of the container. The background is a smooth light gray.
