Netsuke in the shape of a sanbasô dancer, Japanese, Edo period 18th century, netsuke figurine depicting dance/ritual dancer wearing a mask; height 6.3 cm, width 4.0 cm., A small carved wooden figure with a rounded body and an oversized head is shown against a pale gray background; the object displays worn layers of dark brown and black paint with patches of red, gold, and muted green, and areas where the paint has chipped to reveal lighter wood tones; the carving shows curved, rounded shapes and incised details around what appears as facial features and a beaklike projection, with a textured, aged surface and scattered flecks of off-white on the lower portion.
