Netsuke in the shape of a sanbasô dancer, Japanese, Edo period 18th century, netsuke figurine depicting dance/ritual dancer with mask, height 6.3 cm, width 4.0 cm., A small carved object with a worn surface showing a mix of dark colors including black, deep red, brown, and gold, with areas of pale cream where the surface is chipped; the object has a rounded base and an irregular upper portion with layered, folded shapes and carved ridges, and a visible round hole on one side; the painted surface shows decorative brushlike marks and speckled pale dots, and the piece casts a soft shadow on a plain light gray background.
