Inlay with shakudo and gold. 18th century Okre Edo 1603–1868, Japan; Fushimi, Yamashiro; tsuba; dia. 11.3 cm, The image shows a fan-shaped metal object with a textured dark brown surface and areas of coppery and gray metallic sheen; a carved human face in relief appears on one side with a grayish-silver tone, furrowed brows, closed mouth, and a bearded chin, draped by sculpted folds that blend into the body of the object; a vertical narrow opening is present near the center with smooth inner edges surrounded by the same dark brown texture; there are a few small round holes near the bottom edge; rectangular insets of bright gold decorate two horizontal areas on the left side and a small strip at the top, contrasting with the brown and gray tones; the overall background is a neutral pale gray.
