Crossguard tsuba, Akasaka role classification of creator, school author; Japanese; Edo period 1603–1868, 18th/19th century. Tsuba round maru gata with a rounded edge maru mimi; seppa dai oval; sekigane copper. Decorated with openwork ji sukashi decoration, partly positive and partly negative, depicting two crickets among chrysanthemums, flowers, and grasses. Not signed. Function: sword crossguard katana. Diameter 7.2 cm; thickness 0.5 cm., A round metal object with a dark gray to brownish patina sits against a pale gray background; the piece has an openwork design featuring a central oval cutout framed by a ring of thin metal, with floral motifs and leafy vines woven throughout the circular field, a few stylized flowers and several curved leaf shapes, and a couple of insect-like forms rendered in the same dark metallic tones.
