Crossguard tsuba, Japanese, Edo period 17th–18th century. Round tsuba maru gata with a slightly rounded edge kaku mimi ko-niku, copper sekigane. Decorated in low relief with brass inlay depicting two phoenixes hôô in flight on one side and one phoenix on the other, with decoratively spread long tails. Not signed. Diameter 8.5 cm; thickness 0.5 cm., A round metal object with a dark brown surface and golden inlaid lines forming the shape of a bird with flowing tail feathers, showing a bird with outstretched wings near the top and long curved feathers that sweep across the face; there are two rounded cutouts and one narrow central cutout interrupting the surface, and the metal shows areas of wear with hints of reddish-brown and copper tones where the surface is exposed.
