Crossguard tsuba, Tsuchiya Yasuchika 1670–1744, Nara school. Tsuba in the nadegaku gata rectangle with rounded sides form with a slightly distinct rounded edge uchi kaeshi. Obverse in low relief: an elephant covering almost the entire plate; on its back a saddle cloth decorated with a rosette with a tendril and bordered with a meander, supporting a Buddhist flaming jewel Cintamani, symbolizing liberation through the Buddha. Reverse: a large rectangular panel with an inscription in kanji — a fragment of the Lotus Sutra; the backside bears a lengthy inscription relating to the arrival of the elephant in Japan. Edo period 18th/19th century, Japan. Metal tsuba; height 8.7 cm, width 7.9 cm, depth 0.4 cm., A flat, rounded object with a square central panel and three irregularly shaped cutouts, made of dark brown metal with areas of lighter metallic wear; the surface shows a textured, slightly pitted appearance and faint incised lines; a ring of darker brown outlines the outer edge while several patches of silver-gray spotting appear around the perimeter; the background is a pale gray.
