On the reverse a large rectangle with an inscription in kanji — a fragment of the Lotus Sutra; the backside bears a lengthy inscription relating to the arrival of the elephant in Japan. 18th/19th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan. Tsuba; height 8.7 cm, width 7.9 cm, depth 0.4 cm., A close-up view of a square-edged, rounded metal object with a central vertical opening flanked by two irregularly shaped side openings, showing a textured, pitted surface. The object displays a dark brown to almost black patina with areas of lighter gray and silvery patches where the surface appears worn. The central panel is slightly recessed from the rounded rim, and the rim shows mottled lighter silver-gray spots against the darker metal. The texture varies from rough, grainy areas to smoother worn sections, and small irregular chips and indentations are visible along the inner edges of the openings. The overall color palette includes dark brown, black, gray, and silver.
