Crossguard tsuba, Tsuchiya Yasuchika 1670–1744. Nara school. Japanese, Edo period 1603–1868, 18th/19th century. Iron tsuba in the nadegaku gata rectangle with rounded sides shape with a slightly raised rounded edge uchi kaeshi. Obverse: low-relief image of an elephant covering almost the entire plate; on the animal’s back a saddle cloth decorated with a rosette and tendril border with a meander, and a Buddhist flaming jewel Cintamani symbolizing liberation through the Buddha. Reverse: large rectangular inscription in kanji — a fragment of the Lotus Sutra; lengthy inscription relating to the arrival of the elephant in Japan. Height 8.7 cm, width 7.9 cm, thickness 0.4 cm., A single carved oval metal object with a textured dark brown surface and areas of worn silver-gray on raised relief showing a stylized elephant motif; the elephant forms the central negative spaces and has a curved trunk, tusk, and textured legs with carved toes. There are a few decorative gold-colored accents at the top including a floral-like emblem and flame-like shapes, and some gold detailing along a patterned band above the elephant. The background is smooth and neutral gray, and the object shows a varied surface patina with darker brown recesses and lighter silvery highlights on raised areas.
