Crossguard tsuba, Masayoshi. Round tsuba maru gata with a rectangular edge kaku mimi, decorated on both sides with an asymmetrically composed high relief—carved takabori and inlaid with copper and gold takazôgan—depicting a plump pumpkin fruit with decoratively twisting stems, leaves and flowers. Details made with gold inlay using the nunome technique. Signed. 1st half of the 19th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Japan, Inaba historical province. Materials/subjects: metals, Japanese art; motifs include pumpkins, buffalo zodiac, plants. Tsuba; height 8.0 cm, width 8.35 cm, depth 0.45 cm., A round dark gray metal disk with three irregular central openings, decorated with a carved pumpkin and leaves near the lower right edge, a small flower and curling vine above the pumpkin, and thin winding vine accents; the carved elements include highlights in metallic silver and small accents in metallic gold, and the background surface is a textured matte gray.
