Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie craftsman, Japanese, Edo period 18th century. Tsuba in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners nadegaku gata, slightly convex edge uchi kaeshi, with ryôhitsu ana of identical three-petal shape. Decorated in relief: obverse with ten figures of Buddhist and Taoist saints; reverse with a landscape featuring a pavilion and a bridge over an embankment. Details inlaid with gold, shakudo, and brass. Materials/subject: metal sword crossguard tsuba; motifs include pagodas, pine trees, bridges, trees, and rocks. Place of origin: Yamashiro province, Fushimi, Japan. Dimensions: height 8.4 cm; width 7.6 cm; depth 0.4 cm., A square-edged, rounded object with a rough dark brown to black metallic surface resting against a light gray background, showing three irregular cutouts near its center and a carved low-relief design on one side depicting organic, flowing shapes and a partial tree or branch motif with a few small gold-colored inlays; the edges are slightly raised and worn, with some areas showing a lighter brown metal near the central cutout and tiny scattered gold-colored specks on the lower surface.
