Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie role classification of creator, school craftsman author; Japanese; Edo period 1603–1868, 18th century; Yamashiro, Fushimi, Japan. Tsuba in the shape of a kobushi gata with a slightly convex edge; kôgai hitsu closed with shakudô. Decorated on both sides in low and high relief with details inlaid with gold and shakudô. Obverse: Shôki the demon slayer crouched under a tree; reverse: sketched landscape motif. Materials: shakudô and gold. Function: sword crossguard for katana. Dimensions: height 8.9 cm; width 9.6 cm; depth 0.65 cm., A roughly circular, irregularly edged dark metal object with a textured, pitted surface; the metal appears mainly dark gray to black with areas of lighter gray highlights and a bluish oval inset on one side. The piece has three central openings: a tall, narrow tapered one in the middle and two oval openings flanking it, revealing a smooth gray background through them. There are a few small raised and indented marks and rough patches across the surface, and a small area with two tiny round yellowish spots near the lower edge. The overall coloration includes dark gray, black, lighter gray, bluish tones in the inset, and a touch of yellow.
