Brush stand on base, Chinese, Qing dynasty 1644–1911, 19th century. Materials: painting implements; subject: Figure of a Hermit in a cave and other figures, men, scholars, horses, mountains. Dimensions: height 21.0 cm, width 10.0 cm, depth 25.0 cm., A dark brown carved wooden sculpture sits on an ornate stand of similar dark brown wood; the carving depicts a group of mountain-like forms with smooth rounded peaks and ledges, small pavilion-like structures perched on some ledges, and a procession of human figures and animals arranged along a curved base. The figures and animals are carved in relief, with visible limbs and simple clothing or saddles, and a few raised platforms and rounded protrusions create depth against the mountain shapes. The stand features an openwork scrolling pattern and rests on short carved feet. The overall color palette is shades of dark brown with subtle variations from polished highlights to deeper recessed shadows, set against a neutral gray-to-white gradient background.
