Vase, cloisonné enamel; Chinese, Qing dynasty, Xianfeng period 1851–1861; 1st half of the 19th century; height 25.1 cm, diameter 16.5 cm, weight 1.5 kg. The vase is set on a tall, conical foot flaring downwards and terminating in a metal ring, decorated with a lotus tendril. The short, wide neck is topped with a metal ring beneath which is a border composed of ruyi heads. The belly and neck are decorated in a continuous composition of flowers and plum branches against a red Chinese meander background., A rounded vase with a narrow neck and flared rim sits against a neutral background, its main surface a deep red decorated with an intricate repeating geometric pattern in a slightly darker red. A band near the rim shows a scalloped cloud motif in pale green, white, and blue with gold accents, and the rim itself is a metallic gold color. The body of the vase is covered with floral designs featuring large stylized blossoms and leaves in shades of pale green, light blue, cream, and yellow, with some flower centers and petal tips highlighted in dark blue and small touches of pink; the leaves are outlined in gold. A small bird with dark brown and black feathers and a lighter patch near its eye perches among the branches. The foot of the vase has a decorative border on the same red ground with scrolling floral motifs in pale green, blue, and white and a metallic gold band at the base.
