Box with a lid; maker, Chinese art; Qing dynasty 1644–1911, Qianlong period; cloisonné enamel. Oval, spheroidal box on a ring foot, divided halfway into container and lid. Slightly convex bas-relief plaque of grayish jade on the cover depicting a fenghuang phoenix or peacock with a sun among clouds; the sun is in the upper left surrounded by a silk ribbon. Motifs and styling refer to emblems on mandarin squares: peacock indicating third civil rank and the sun referring to imperial authority. The jade plaque is an exceptionally fine example of workmanship. Rounded sides of both container and lid decorated with a multi-colored lotus tendril stripe on a turquoise background. Interior filled with a uniform layer of turquoise enamel. Metal rings reinforcing the edges of the container, lid, and plaque attachment are gilded. 18th century, China. Height 8.2 cm; width 11.3 cm; diameter 12.2 cm., A round decorative box with a domed lid carved from pale cream material sits on a short circular base; the body and lid rim have bands of metallic gold. The rounded sides of the box are covered in a turquoise-blue background decorated with scrolling floral patterns in green, gold, purple, blue, white, and red, with several stylized flower motifs. The carved lid shows low-relief swirling designs in the same pale cream color. The overall color palette includes turquoise-blue, gold, cream, green, purple, blue, white, and red.
