Incense burner in the shape of a leather cistern, 2nd half of the 19th century, Japan; vessel, censer; height 16.3 cm, width 26.5 cm., A dark brown carved object with a glossy surface sits on a pale surface against a gray background. The main form has a rounded, bulbous body with several pointed protrusions and a handle-like arch on one side. A group of small sculpted figures in similar dark brown material are arranged around the base: one figure stands on a small rectangular block, another stands with arms raised in front of the main body, and a third stands on a circular stepped platform holding a pail. The sculpture shows varied textures with smooth rounded areas, carved details on the figures' clothing and faces, and some lighter brown highlights where the surface appears worn. The overall colors visible are dark brown, lighter brown accents, pale off-white of the surface below, and gradients of gray in the background.
