Hu-type vase, hu vessel, Chinese, Ming dynasty 1368–1644, Xuande period 1426–1435, possibly backdated signatures, taotie ornamentation, ceremonial/ritual vessel, height 31.5 cm, width 17.0 cm., A tall metal vessel with a flared rim and bulbous body stands against a plain light gray background; the vessel shows a greenish patina with areas of dark brown and black, and a few lighter green and coppery spots. It has a pair of curved handles attached near the neck, each ending in a curled tip and featuring small sculpted animal head terminals, and the body is decorated with raised, carved motifs in low relief including stylized animal and geometric patterns around the midsection and a shieldlike decorative panel on the upper body. The surface appears aged and slightly mottled, and the vessel sits on a short foot that reflects faintly on the smooth surface beneath it.
