Vase, Toshitsugu maker; Meiji period 19th/20th century, Japan. Ovoid vase on a low ring foot with a very short neck and strongly flaring, plate-like spout. Decorated with relief, applied, inlaid and engraved naturalistic decoration arranged asymmetrically: a wisteria vine with three abundant clusters of flowers hanging from the neck; a kingfisher perches on a branch near the lowest flower, gazing into engraved water with engraved fish. Decoration uses the ro-iro zogan inlaid color painting technique—inlaying various metals and alloys and colored enamels white, several shades of lilac, subtle green accents. Leaves and bird are gilded and patinated with shakudo. Lower belly engraved with inscription: Sumisuiin Toshitsugu sei. Vessel; height 16.2 cm, diameter 7.1 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a rounded shoulder and a small flared neck, finished in a dark, matte surface that appears brownish-black, with decorative raised floral elements climbing down one side. The floral decoration features a cluster of small, hanging blossoms rendered in purple and pale tones with metallic highlights, accompanied by leaves and tendrils in muted green and brass-like gold. The vase shows subtle surface variations and patina in darker and lighter brown areas, with fine incised lines and shallow scratches on its body. It stands on a short, slightly flared foot that is darker with a faint sheen, and the whole object is set against a plain, light gray background, reflected faintly below.
