Vase, Toshitsugu maker, Meiji period 19th/20th century, Japan. Ovoid vase on a low ring foot with a very short neck and a strongly flaring, plate-like spout. Decorated in a naturalistic, asymmetrical composition showing a wisteria vine with three clusters of flowers hanging from the top near the neck; a kingfisher perches on a branch near the lowest flower, gazing into engraved water with swimming fish. Decoration executed with ro-iro zogan inlaid color painting combining inlaid metals and alloys with colored enamels white, several shades of lilac, subtle green accents. Leaves and bird figurine are gilded and patinated with shakudo. Lower belly bears engraved inscription: Sumisuiin Toshitsugu sei. Cloisonné enamel vessel, height 16.2 cm, diameter 7.1 cm., A tall dark vase with a narrow neck and flared rim stands against a neutral background, decorated with raised botanical motifs including a few cascading clusters of purple and pale lilac flowers, several elongated leaves rendered in shades of dark green and muted gold, and a small bird with greenish and brown tones perched among the foliage; the body of the vase is primarily deep brown to black with subtle reflective highlights, and there are hints of bronze and metallic sheen on the leaves and rim.
