Vase by Namikawa Yasuyuki 1845–1927, cloisonné enamel, ca. 1890–1905 Meiji period. A small, slender vase with a body tapering toward the bottom and terminating in a ring-shaped silver foot. The arms merge into a short neck slightly parted at the spout, enclosed by a silver ring. At the foot is an ornamental shippo motif border with rosettes inscribed in rhomboid fields; a similar ornament adorns the neck. From the neck a decoration of petals filled with stylized phoenix images flows down to the shoulders. The belly is covered with glossy black enamel decorated with six colorful reserves shaped like unfolded fans, each with various floral and bird motifs executed with meticulous precision in the yusen technique using silver wires. On the foot, in the mirror of the bottom, a silver plaque with an engraved signature reads “Kyoto Namikawa.” Kyoto, Japan. Height 18.0 cm; diameter 7.8 cm., A rounded vessel viewed from above with a central circular opening surrounded by a narrow metallic rim and a decorative ring, the body showing a repeating ornate pattern of stylized bird-like shapes and floral motifs in colors including black, brown, green, blue, teal, white, and pale pink, set against a dark background with lighter gray around the outer edges.
