Vase by Namikawa Yasuyuki 1845–1927, cloisonné enamel, ca. 1890–1905 Meiji period. Small, slender vase tapering toward the bottom to a ring-shaped silver foot; short neck with a slightly parted spout enclosed by a silver ring. Ornamental shippo cloisonné border with rosettes in rhomboid fields at the foot and neck. Petal decoration filled with stylized phoenix images flows down to the shoulders. Belly finished in glossy black enamel with six colorful, fan-shaped reserves depicting various floral and bird motifs, executed with meticulous precision in the yusen technique with silver wires. Silver plaque mounted in the mirror of the base engraved “Kyoto Namikawa.” Height 18.0 cm; diameter 7.8 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a glossy black background features several fan-shaped painted panels in bright colors and ornate borders; a large lime green panel shows two flying birds with brown and white feathers above a branch with red and green flowers, a sky-blue panel displays delicate white and yellow flowers with green stems and leaves, and a pale cream panel contains leafy botanical motifs; the neck and base have geometric decorative bands in cream, green, blue, and brown, and the vase shows additional accents in gold and turquoise against the black surface.
