Tray, Namikawa Sôsuke 1847–1910 maker, Japanese, Meiji period ca. 1890–1900. Rectangular cloisonné tray with rounded corners, height 1.3 cm, width 23.1 cm, depth 17.2 cm. Obverse: asymmetrical painterly composition showing a white heron standing on one leg beside a clump of white and blue irises against a neutral background shifting from bluish at the bottom to cream with a hint of pink at the top, achieved primarily with the musen wireless enamel technique; sparse wires shosen retain definition for the bird’s beak and legs. Reverse: dense cherry blossom ornament in two shades of brown on a matte dark brown enamel ground, flowers executed in cloisonné yusen with gold wires; central silver-wired seal bearing the signature Sakigake. Deep glossy black tray edge of shakudo alloy. Made in Nagoya, Japan., A shallow rectangular tray seen from a low front angle, showing a dark brown rim decorated with a repeating floral pattern in a warm golden brown, a glossy black outer edge, and an interior surface in a creamy beige with subtle darker beige shading; the background and surface are light gray.
