Vase. Maker: Hayakawa, Komejirô fl. ca. 1880–1912. Meiji period late 19th century, Nagoya, Japan. Small ovoid, bulging bottle on a very low round foot framed in silver-plated metal, with a short narrow neck and flared spout also framed in silver-plated metal. Body covered with transparent red enamel akasuke technique, developed around 1880 in Nagoya. Motif of water birds—plovers chidori—done with the yusen technique using thin silver wires, shown flying over foaming waves or perching on the water; treatment combines naturalism and decorative stylization typical of Japanese design. Signature engraved in kanji on the bottom: Hayakawa zo tsukuru. Vessel. Height 16.7 cm; diameter 9.9 cm., A round object with a deep red glossy surface sits against a plain gray background, viewed from above to show a central circular opening with a metallic rim and a dark interior; a few stylized bird figures in white and gray are arranged around the red surface, and there are subtle variations in the red tone with small darker speckles.
