Vase, cloisonné enamel, ovoid vase one of a pair, slender, on a low ring-shaped foot and with a narrow neck, flaring at the rim. The foot and mouth are framed with sheet metal. Decorated with a motif of a blooming iris bush, captured with naturalistic fidelity and attention to a variety of color tones. Executed using the yusen technique, the motif is placed against a uniform sea-green background. Around the foot and the rim there are narrow, colorful borders, also made using the yusen technique, composed of small triangular forms called cicada wings. Ca. 1900 Meiji period, 1868–1912, Japan, Nagoya. Vessel; height 25 cm, width 9.7 cm, depth 8.8 cm., A tall vase with a narrow neck and flared rim sits against a neutral background; the vase is predominantly teal and has painted floral motifs featuring a few long green leaves and several flowers with white and pale purple petals, with hints of yellow and darker purple in some petals; the rim and base have metallic brown edges and a decorative band with small repeating shapes in red, blue, white, and gold.
