Vase, gift, repossession Krakow — irises — Japanese art, Meiji 1868–1912 — flowers iconography — cloisonné enamel — Japanese culture — Ovoid vase one of a pair, slender, on a low ring-shaped foot and a narrow neck, flaring at the rim. The foot and mouth are framed with sheet metal. Decorated with a motif of a blooming iris bush, captured with naturalistic fidelity and attention to a variety of color tones. Executed using the yusen technique, the motif is placed against a uniform sea-green background. Around the foot and the rim there are narrow, colorful borders, also made using the yusen technique, composed of small triangular forms called cicada wings. Ca. 1900 Meiji Period, 1868–1912, Nagoya, Japan. Vessel. Height 25 cm; width 9.7 cm; depth 8.8 cm., A tall, slender vase with a narrow neck and flared rim sits against a pale gray background, the vase surface a deep teal color with a glossy finish; a stylized floral motif decorates the front, showing a purple flower with lighter purple highlights and yellow-orange accents, surrounded by long, slender green leaves and stems; the rim has a thin brown edge and a small decorative band with muted colors, and the base shows a narrow red band with a repeating scalloped pattern in blue, white, and yellow; the vase casts a soft reflection on the surface beneath it.
