Vase, poppies; cloisonné enamel; Meiji period ca. 1900, 1868–1912; Japanese, Nagoya. Angular vase one of a pair with rounded edges, on a low round foot and with a short neck slightly flaring at the spout. The bottom of the foot and the edge of the spout are framed in silver-plated copper. Against a uniform dark garnet background with a purple hue, a decoratively but faithfully depicted tall flower grows from the base to the neck. Stems with alternating, elongated, jagged leaves in pale grayish green support large, full corollas of white and light purple flowers with dense yellow stamens and a green pistil; the motif is executed using the yusen technique, with thin silver wires structuring the delicate leaves and petals. Plant stems are accentuated with chocolate brown enamel. The flowers are presented slightly differently in each vase, enhancing naturalness. Around the foot and neck is a border of small geometric semicircle and rhombus motifs in white and two shades of blue, also in the yusen technique. Vessel; height 18.4 cm, width 7.5 cm, depth 7 cm., A tall, narrow vase with a glossy deep navy surface and a rounded shoulder tapering to a slim neck and small flared rim, featuring a botanical motif of a pale blue rounded bud on a reddish-brown stem with several pale blue serrated leaves, a decorative band of light blue and white scalloped pattern at the base and just below the rim, and metallic bronze-colored trim at the rim and base; the background is a neutral light gray.
