Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Osaka, Japan. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachoga flowers-and-birds motif: a small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament on the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck and growing from the rock where a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying around the plants. Warm, milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted maker’s mark at the bottom in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan.
