Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Osaka, Japan. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachoga flowers-and-birds motif: a small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament on the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck and growing from the rock where a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying around the plants. Warm, milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted maker’s mark at the bottom in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. Ceramic vessel; height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm., An off-white ceramic vase with a long narrow neck and bulbous base sits against a gray background; the vase is decorated with painted floral and botanical motifs in gold, brown, green, red, muted purple, and black, including a twisting brown vine, clusters of leaves and flowers, and a rocky formation near the base, with subtle crackle texture on the glaze and a thin pale gold band around the foot.
