Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934, c. 1900 Meiji 33, Osaka, Japan. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated in kachôga flowers-and-birds motif: a small delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament in the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck, growing from the rock on which a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying around the plants. Warm, milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Painter’s mark in gold at the bottom: in a square cartouche, three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. Ceramic vessel, height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm., A slender-necked ceramic vase with a rounded body sits against a neutral gray background; the body of the vase is an off-white or cream color with delicate painted decoration featuring a group of flowers with green leaves, a small bird perched on a textured brown mound, and a twisted brown tree branch with foliage, while the neck shows a climbing vine with leaves in shades of gold and muted green and clusters of pale lavender flowers; additional small birds appear in flight on the upper body; the rim and base have subtle gold accents.
