Onion-shaped vase with a low ring foot and long slender neck bulging at the spout, decorated with a freely composed kachôga flowers-and-birds motif: a small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament on the lower belly; a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwining the neck, growing from a rock on which a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black flying around the plants. Warm milky glaze with very fine cracklework, thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted maker’s mark at the base in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. Meiji period, c. 1900 Meiji 33. Satsuma ceramics, Japanese; Osaka. Height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm. Maker: Yabu Meizan 1853–1934. Function: vessel., A cream-colored ceramic vase with a long narrow neck and bulbous base sits against a gray background; the vase has painted floral and vine motifs in gold, brown, green, and red, with delicate branches and leaves winding around the body and a small bird motif on the neck, and the rim and base show gold accents, while the surface displays a subtle crackle texture and the vase casts a soft reflection on the surface beneath it.
