Vase, Yabu Meizan 1853–1934. Onion-shaped vase on a low ring foot with a long, slender neck bulging at the spout. Decorated with a freely composed kachôga flowers-and-birds motif: a golden-leafed wisteria vine with white blooms entwines the neck, growing from the rock on which a sparrow perches; a tall rose bush with white and red blooms stands beside the wisteria; two sparrows painted in gold and iron black fly around the plants. A small, delicately hatched black-and-gold ornament is placed in the lower part of the belly. Warm milky glaze with very fine cracklework; thin gold stripe around the foot and gilded rim. Gold-painted signature in a square cartouche with three kanji characters: Yabu Meizan. c. 1900 Meiji 33, Osaka, Japan. Ceramic vessel; height 15.0 cm, diameter 8.0 cm., A pale cream-colored ceramic vase with a long narrow neck and a rounded body stands against a soft gray background; the surface is decorated with delicate painted botanical motifs in shades of muted gold, soft green, pale pink, deep red, and subtle brown, showing winding branches, clusters of flowers, and leafy sprays, with a small bird perched on a textured rocky form near the base; the rim and foot have touches of gold, and the vase casts a faint reflection on the smooth surface beneath it.
