Box with a lid, Jômi, Eisuke I 1839-1899 artist, geese, grass, Japanese art, boxes, Japanese culture, Meiji 1868-1912, lids. Rectangular box with rounded corners, decorated on the flat lid with two flying wild geese, made in high relief with inlay of silver and gold iro-e zogan technique. The side walls are decorated with a motif of inclined reeds, made of silver and shakudo using the hira-zogan technique, i.e. the decorative motif is level with the background surface, giving a painted effect. On the lid there is a signature made in gold: in a square field, two stylized kanji characters resembling archaic ones: Shobi. Ca. 1880–1899 Meiji Period, 1868–1912, Japan, Kyoto. Container; height 4.8 cm, width 10.2 cm, depth 11.4 cm., A square metal box with rounded corners sits on a gray surface, showing a warm brown and bronze exterior with darker brown top inset; the lid features a raised depiction of a flying bird rendered in dark brown with golden accents on the beak and feet, and a second bird partially visible with similar dark and gold tones; the box sides display delicate dark blue or black linear plant-like motifs against the brown background, and the box rests on small rounded feet with lighter worn areas.
