A slender miniature vase by Nogawa, ca. 1890–1900 Meiji period, 1868–1912, Japan, Kyoto. Silver with gilding and black shakudo patina; height 15.7 cm, width 5.3 cm. Belly widening slightly toward the top with narrow straight arms, no neck, and a spout in the form of a flat ring; round, slightly recessed base with an engraved brand. Sparse decoration: a naturalistically treated wisteria vine placed on the upper belly on one side with a sumptuous hanging flower cluster nearly reaching the base. Masterly technique combining various metals and alloys produces a colorful effect—darker toned motif against the background—where naturalism is combined with sublime decorativeness., A round object viewed from above with a central dark circular opening surrounded by concentric raised rims in brown and brass tones, set against a light gray background; the outer rim shows a slightly darker brown edge and subtle patina variations, and the interior appears deep black.
