Tray, Meiji 1868–1912, lacquer. With a high vertical rim. Primed wood, black lacquer; decoration dusted with gold, silver, tin, and amaranth paint. Golden-orange background with small flowers, black cartouches with birds among twigs; motifs include kachôga birds and flowers, peonies, water, flowers ornament, fans. 19th/20th century, Japan. Height 3.5 cm; width 50.8 cm; depth 29.4 cm., A rectangular tray with rounded corners shows a speckled rusty orange border surrounding a large black central area shaped with curved insets, featuring painted botanical and bird scenes; within the black area there is a pale beige bamboo water spout with flowing water, two small beige birds perched on the spout, a flying beige bird with spread wings, and several beige and pale pink flowers and leaves on thin brown stems, along with pale green grass and a few beige stumps, all set against the dark background with accents of rusty orange and black speckling on the tray surface.
