Pool - aquarium, Chinese, Qing dynasty 1644–1911, 19th century. Porcelain colored decoration with chrysanthemums, lotuses and birds. Bulging vessel narrowed at the bottom; height 41.5 cm, diameter 41.1 cm. Function: aquarium/ornamental pool., A rounded ceramic vessel sits against a dark background, predominantly white with painted decorative scenes. The vessel shows a group of birds including cranes with red crowns and a few smaller birds in flight, rendered in shades of black, gray, and white with red accents. There are floral and foliage motifs around the base and sides in colors including teal, blue, green, pink, orange, and purple. A stylized colorful bird or phoenix with bright pink, blue, and orange feathers appears on one side, and several leafy stems and blossoms in green and blue surround the birds. The rim has a weathered brownish edge and the interior appears light grayish white. The piece rests on a dark surface.
