Incense burner koro, Meiji period late 19th century, Japan; bronze vessel with dragon-shaped handles; decorated with dragons, devils, elephants, zodiac signs, peacocks, pine trees, peonies, bodhisattva imagery, and Amaterasu; function: incense burner; dimensions: height 255.0 cm, width 78.0 cm, depth 46.0 cm., A tall ornate metal sculpture stands against a plain light-gray background, showing a dark brown to black patina with some subtle reddish-brown highlights; the piece rises from a round stepped base into a wide tripod section with carved animal-like feet and a band of decorative relief, above which a column formed by sculpted human figures and wrapped ornamental elements supports a bulbous central vessel adorned with high-relief foliage and figural motifs, further topped by a narrower neck with layered carved rings and crowned by a small standing human figure.
