You-type vessel with a lid on a stand, cloisonné enamel, Qianlong period 1736–1795, Qing dynasty, China. Elaborate, precise, multi-colored cellular enamel decoration on body and lid depicting a taotie mask and stylized bird images, motifs borrowed from archaic bronzes. Plastic insets decorate the sides and animal heads are placed on both sides of the movable handle. The you vessel with a lid and movable handle was originally used for storing alcoholic beverages during the Shang Dynasty. Wooden stand mattly polished rosewood, elongated shape, decorated with bas-reliefs of symbolic representations bats and spiral ornament. Height vessel 39.0 cm; width 24.0 cm; depth 19.0 cm; weight 5.6 kg. Stand: height 55.0 cm; width 30.0 cm; depth 18.0 cm; weight 1.8 kg. The surface of the vessel displays repeating ornamental motifs and curving shapes in contrasting blues, reds, greens, and gold, with prominent gold fittings and decorative elements including sculpted gold faces and ornamental gold ridges. The wooden frame and base are dark reddish-brown with intricate carved patterns and twisted rope-like supports, and the frame rises above the vessel to form a handle-like arch. The background is a plain neutral gray.
