You-type vessel with a lid on a stand, maker, Chinese, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period 1736–1795. Cloisonné cellular enamel masterpiece; ritual/ceremonial you vessel originally used for storing alcoholic beverages form dates to Shang dynasty. Elaborate, precise, multicolored cloisonné decoration on body and lid depicting a taotie mask and stylized birds—motifs borrowed from archaic bronzes. Plastic insets on the sides and animal-head terminals on both sides of the movable handle. Wooden base mattly polished rosewood elongated with bas-relief decoration: symbolic bats and spiral ornament. Materials: cloisonné enamel, wood stand.
