Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo Zoshuntei Sampo, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain storage pot with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in cobalt underglaze with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking water, a mountainous scene with waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Southern School Chinese painting and the Japanese bunjinga/nanga movement, executed with free-form painting and precise, masterful lines in bright, pure cobalt tones. Underglaze signature: Zoshuntei Sampo zo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A round ceramic object with a white base and a pattern in shades of blue showing broad, rounded brushstrokes that resemble a group of overlapping petal- or leaf-like shapes, with soft gradients from deep blue to pale blue and some subtle darker blue outlines and accents, set against a neutral light gray background.
