Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo signed Zoshuntei Sampo zo, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain jar with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in cobalt in several tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking water, with mountains, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and sailing boats on the horizon; lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangles; lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Southern School Chinese painting and the Japanese bunjinga/nanga movement; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm. Materials: blue-and-white porcelain. Periods: Edo–Meiji Edo 1603–1868; Meiji 1868–1912., An off-white cylindrical ceramic object with blue painted decoration around its side, featuring a stylized landscape motif with a group of rounded blue shaded forms resembling rocks or hills on one side and a single larger blue rounded form on the other, a band of diagonal hatched pattern in blue near the base, a thin blue line above that band, and subtle variations of blue shading and brushwork across the surface; background color is a muted light gray-beige.
