Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo signed Zoshuntei Sampo zo, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Blue-and-white porcelain, pear-shaped body with flat cylindrical lid; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm. Decorated in cobalt in several tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with waterfall, lofty peaks, and boat sails on the horizon. Lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid painted with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting and the Japanese bunjinga nanga movement; free-form painting and precise, masterful lines indicate an excellent porcelain decorator. Materials and technique: blue-and-white porcelain, underglaze cobalt. Cultural context: Edo–Meiji period Edo 1603–1868; Meiji 1868–1912., An off-white ceramic jar with a rounded body and a narrow open neck topped by an unglazed beige rim, decorated with hand-painted blue landscape motifs including stylized hills, foliage, and water-like brushstrokes, a geometric blue band near the base, and a patterned blue border below the neck, shown against a neutral gray background with a subtle reflection beneath it.
