Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo Zoshuntei Sampo zo, c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain vessel with flat cylindrical lid, Arita, Japan. Decorated in cobalt underglaze in several tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting alone under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and boat sails on the horizon. Lower base bears a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid feature diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid is decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Southern School Chinese painting and the Japanese bunjinga nanga movement; free-form painting and precise, masterful lines. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A porcelain jar with a rounded body and a slightly flared, unglazed rim sits against a neutral gray background, decorated with blue painted landscape motifs showing stylized rocky forms and flowing water, with a patterned band near the base and a narrow geometric border below the rim; visible colors include white, several shades of blue, beige on the rim, and gray in the background and reflections.
