Storage Vessel with Lid, Zôshuntei Sanpo 1841–1878. Storage pot, blue-and-white porcelain, Japanese, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Pear-shaped vessel with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a broad body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails; lower base has a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting and Japanese bunjinga nanga influence; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines; cobalt in bright, pure shades in several tones. Underglaze cobalt signature on bottom: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A ceramic jar with a rounded body and a narrow rim, decorated in blue on a white ground; the top rim has an unglazed band in a tan color. The surface shows a painted scene in shades of blue with flowing brushwork, including organic shapes that resemble foliage and rounded forms, and a figure-like shape seated among the design. A decorative geometric band encircles the lower portion in blue. The jar sits on a reflective gray surface that mirrors its base, and the background is a smooth neutral gray. Colors visible include blue, white, tan, and gray.
