Storage vessel with lid, by Zôshuntei Sanpo c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain with flat cylindrical lid; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm; Arita, Japan; Edo–Meiji period. Decorated in cobalt in several tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a broad expanse of water, with waterfall, lofty peaks, and boat sails on the horizon. Lower base features a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid shows a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Southern School Chinese painting and Japanese bunjinga nanga influence; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Underglaze cobalt signature on the base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo., A ceramic jar with a rounded body and a separate lid, decorated in blue on a white ground. The surface shows brush-painted landscape motifs including stylized mountains, trees, and water rendered in varying shades of blue. A patterned band in blue encircles the shoulder and another geometric band decorates the lower body. The background is a neutral gray.
