Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpô signature painted underglaze in cobalt: Zoshuntei Sampo zo, c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped blue-and-white porcelain storage pot with flat cylindrical lid; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm; Arita, Japan. Decorated in a Chinese-style Southern School landscape: an old man resting alone under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base bears a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid show diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid decorated with a rock motif. Design reflects influence of Chinese painting and the Japanese bunjinga nanga movement; free-form painting with precise, masterful cobalt lines in bright, pure shades.
