Storage Vessel with Lid, Zôshuntei Sanpo 1841–1878. Storage pot, blue-and-white porcelain, Japanese; Arita, c. 1842–1878. Pear-shaped vessel with flat cylindrical lid. Decorated in a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking a wide body of water, with mountainous scenery, a waterfall, lofty peaks, and distant boat sails. Lower base bears a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower lid edge have diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs. Lid decorated with a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting, influencing Japanese bunjinga nanga; free-form painting with precise, masterful lines. Cobalt in bright, pure shades in several tones. Underglaze cobalt signature on the base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo. Height 21.8 cm; diameter 15.3 cm., A lidded porcelain jar with a glossy white surface decorated in blue, showing a rounded body that tapers toward the base and a matching cylindrical lid, both featuring painted landscape-like shapes and brushwork in shades of blue; the jar has a patterned band near the shoulder and another geometric band near the foot, and the overall colors visible are white and several tones of blue against a neutral gray background.
