Storage vessel with lid by Zôshuntei Sanpo Zoshuntei Sampo, c. 1842–1878, Arita, Japan. Blue-and-white porcelain, pear-shaped vessel with flat cylindrical lid; height 21.8 cm, diameter 15.3 cm. Decorated in cobalt underglaze in several bright tones with a Chinese-style landscape: an old man resting under a pine on a rocky cliff overlooking water, mountains, a waterfall, and distant boat sails. Lower register has a wide ornamental band of three vertical and two crossed lines; neck and lower edge of lid feature diagonal-line bands forming triangular motifs; lid bears a rock motif. Decoration modeled on Chinese Southern School painting and Japanese bunjinga nanga influences; free-form painting and finely executed lines indicate a highly skilled decorator. Underglaze cobalt signature on base: Zoshuntei Sampo zo made by Zoshuntei Sampo.
